INTEC...My would-be home for the next 18 months...

Well, as my life as an Intec student is about to begin, I might as well post up some details I found out about Intec. Some sort of info for Intec-students-to-be as well...

Mostly related to AUSMAT students, though.

PS: sources from http://www.campusalive.blogspot.com/ and http://www.recom.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5893#135101

Accomodation:
-Apartment styled "house"
-2 bedrooms with 2 beds in each of them, a living room with 4 study tables, 2 sofas, one large mirror, one white board, one SMALL fan, NO air-con, one small bathroom with NO hot water, one balcony, and one mini kitchen (no cooking, though)
-Spotchecks will be conducted randomly...imagine that...

Food:
-Loads of food stalls/restaurants around the area, from fast food to economy rice.
-Pasar malam once a week
-AUSMAT Cafe in Intec is the best among the 3 (AUSMAT cafe, ADFP/ALG/ADCP Cafe, ALM Cafe). Air-conditioned, supposedly reasonable price, quite a lot of choices from Fried Chicken to Waffle...

Water supply:
-Water that sometimes resembles MUD. Better get own filter.

Transport:
-Bus. Rather slow, ALWAYS jam-packed, and may have to wait up to 1 hour for Bus.
-Have to leave AT LEAST one hour before class

Security:
-Bad. Very bad.
-Security guards more interested in giving summons of dress code for people than actually monitoring safety.
-Fequent thefts, and flimsy locks that can easily be pried open.

Computer Labs
-Apparently the WORST facility in Intec
-No MSN, No Friendster, No Youtube, No anything-I-wanna-use (man, they had better NOT block Blogger...)
-EVEN NO WIKIPEDIA in some labs!!
-Wireless service available in hostels. CONNECTION SUCKS.
-Intec computers: COUNTLESS VIRUS, WORMS, TROJANS, etc, making personal laptops prone to infection as well.
-Cannot install stuff, ie: No Antivirus either

Dress Code For Girls: (SCREAMS!!)
-Long sleeved shirts that cover the butt.
-Formal on Monday & Friday, ie: Baju Kurung (DAMN...)
-Summons issued by guards for clothing that do not follow EXACTLY as stated

Electrical Items:
-RM10 per item per semester
-No television, No Fridge, No Aircon, No water heater

Recreational Activities:
-Badminton Courts and Ping Pong tables available in Akasia/ Cemara

Course Details:
AUSMAT
(sourced from Campus Alive)

Basically there are two types of plan of study:1) Year 11 (6 months) + Year 12 (12months) = 18 months. If you are a JPA or a MARA scholar offered to study in Australia or New Zealand, you will most likely follow this study plan if you are placed at INTEC for your pre-U.In the year after your SPM year, you will begin your AUSMAT program in June-July until November starting with what we call ‘the bridging course’ named Year 11 for 6 months.

A lot, a lot, A LOT or assignments, presentations, etc

Medical related course will have Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. ESLS is compulsory for all students. At the end of Year 11, you will sit for the Year 11 final examination.The following months in AUSMAT Year 12, and during this period, you will face extensive study on the subjects related to your course. From time to time, you will face quizzes, tests, and exams (mid-term, finals and trials). Simultaneously, you are also required to accomplish many assignments for each subject.

Take ESLS for example, you will be asked to search for a research topic and conduct a study as though you are asked to do a mini thesis paper with scholarly ‘protocols’, formats and citations. In the AUSMAT program, it is highly advisable that you consult your lecturer AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE because they are honestly truly sacrificial and willing to help you in anyway they can! At the end, you will face an external major exam called the SSABSA examination for the subjects of your course.

Internal and external assessments in AUSMAT/SAM are accumulative and counted in the final calculation of your TER (Tertiary Entrance Ranking – over 100).Therefore, it is crucial that you perform consistently throughout as your performance even in attendance, participation in class, quizzes, tests and assignments are recorded and counted in your final TER.TER is something like a ranking of your performance in the AUSMAT/SAM program for all AUSMAT/SAM students WORLDWIDE for a particular year. Let’s say I took the SSABSA exam in 2007 and my TER value is 95, this signifies that I am among the top 5% worldwide who did best in the AUSMAT/SAM program for year 2007.

PS: TER for Veterinary is ridiculous...Even a TER of 96 is not a guaranteed entry...

This program is packed with tones of assignments which take up loads of time and energy, sometimes to the point that we have little time to study for our exams. In this program, you will be sharpened to be more independent in finding information through wide ranges of sources, from journals to books, from newspapers to reports, from the internet to even books of other programs. All sorts of sources are useable as long as it is valid and not out-dated.To conclude, this program offers little in terms of knowledge but more to skills in dealing with scholarly materials, time constraints and pressure. I quote most of my seniors by saying that you will find yourself comfortable in dealing with university studies if you do well in the AUSMAT program. The skills cultivated will help you enormously in your degree programs.

And well, from my SAM friends, ie: Faye, Isabelle, etc..There're loads of INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATIONS and you guys know me, I detest public speaking!!!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~
Savouring my last few days in Taylor's now, spending my entire day in ECA office...Still working my ass off for Music Club and Anime Society...It's official, I'm an incurable pat gua...Really hope everything goes well during those events...
In a few days, I'll be off to Intec. Off to a place full of scholars, where I'll finally have to survive on my own. Hmm...still can come back though, anytime I want...Intec's not THAT far...
Minimum TER 96...means hav to be top 4% in the world...jeez...
Guess I've having some withdrawal symptoms from Taylors......................................
But then again, IF I survive Intec, IF I get the TER required, IF I make in into, and through VET school.....I will return in about 7 years from now...5 years of Free Education...and back as a fully fledged Veterinarian...
The big IFs...
Hey,
I'm seeking help for the children of Haiti.
I'm doing my part for a non-profit group that gives time to
building an oppurunity for the kids in haiti. If anybody wants to help then this is the site:
Donate to Haiti or Help Haiti
They give children in Haiti books and teach them.
Yes, they're legit.
Any help would be great
Finally, realize that all the various bookmakers have their own rules and policies regarding how they settle bets done through arbitrage sports betting when they have such irregular results. As with the advice on pricing, be sure to check the rules of the individual bookmakers before you place your bets.
Everyone who is involved in any kind of gaming, gambling, or betting as heard the stories of legendary people who have supposedly created the next foolproof betting system and have used the system themselves to help them to avoid losing and get higher profits over the long haul. The fact is that there is not a system in existence that can guarantee you that you will definitely be successful and never lose.
sport book betting
For quite some time the United States House of Representatives has been trying to pass a bill that will make it much more difficult for people to get away with breaking the online gambling laws. Not to mention stricter penalties for those who are caught.
Another important subject I must briefly refer to is "catch-up" staking. If you find that you need to employ this tactic regularly, it means three things: (1) your Selection System sucks, (2) you haven't got a clue about what constitutes a proper Staking Plan, and (3) you have turned your chances of regularly and quickly losing your Base Bank to a 100% certainty!
Hi people,
What online mags do you read and would recommend?
For all you punk folks out there I recommend The Enough Fanzine. It is one of the first ska zines on the web.
They have throusands of reviews from the most popular bands all over the world. Check them out online: Enough Fanzine. Best of it all, they are 100% non-profit and just helping the scene!
Looking forward to your recommendations.
Regards!
Everything about horse betting
In addition to offering the full menu of track bets, i.e., Win, Place, Show, Daily Doubles, Exactas, Quinellas, Trifectas and Superfectas, some have started offering additional types of wagers such as a two horse match bet. This, in our opinion, is the most significant opportunity for horse racing today. In an era where proposition bets on football range from the point spread to which way the wind will be blowing at half time, horse racing is missing the boat. They've failed to recognize what Las Vegas has known for some time, namely that gaming is entertainment and that the way to increase 'handle' is to offer more types of wagers. This year's Superbowl offered over 300 proposition bets resulting in a record setting day for the Las Vegas sports books with over 94 million dollars wagered. To put that into perspective, that's about .6% of the 15 billion dollars wagered annually on horse racing.
horce racing charts
In a sport that is not only highly competitive but relies on high-stakes gambling to sustain itself, some people feel it is unlikely that a practice shown to be a disadvantage would continue. However, such cruelties exist and many countries are taking strong steps to stop it. Like in India for example, it is banned, that is until the jockey has proven himself.
Will Barbaro be the next Triple Crown winner? He has the breeding and the talent, but as of this writing twenty horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to fail at Belmont. Twenty five more have won two of the three races, but maybe this year...
bet on the derby
Sweetnorthernsaint ridden by Kent Desormeaux was favored to win the Derby, but finished a disappointing seventh by 13 lengths. That though, after a bumped start and being steadied before finally tiring. With a lifetime 3 wins out of 7 starts, all 3 have come this year, and the shorter distance of the Preakness might be more to his liking.
SPCA, and MUSICAL NIGHT!!! and some rantings...,
Now it seems like each week I go to SPCA, I enjoy it even more. The good, the bad, all the experiences I'm gaining, its different each week, and each becomes a valuable memory I'm not likely to forget. In fact, I've discovered today that SPCA seems to be the only place so far that I can actually de-stress fully...considering I've been teethering on the brink of sheer stress and exhaustion for the past week...It was only with the doggies that I could actually "forget" all the problems temporarily...
Anyway, I've decided that everytime I blog after going to SPCA, I'll post a featured pet-of-the-week here on my blog. Mostly, it'll be the one who actually stood still for a picture...hehe...So, remember to check it out, and do leave a comment or inquiry...*grins*
So anyway, featured pet of the week: Pepe!!!
This utterly adorable Cocker Spaniel has a nasty case of skin disease, quite sad to see, really...but omg, he is SO SO SO SO SO SO SWEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reve allowed me to let him out, and WOW...no sign of self-pity (like humans do) or anything of that sort! There's not a mean bone in this adorable dog's body, he's a furry bundle of love!!! He was 100% obedient, always following me around, and answering immediately when I call him. We're treating him with that miracle Pine oil at the moment...his skin ailment will probably clear up soon, and we're hoping a kind soul will come and fall in love with this sweet fellow...I sure did.....
Also, in loving memory of Rachel, the sweet, loving, Dalmatian who was in SPCA longer than I've been volunteering. After a battle with kidney failure, the poor soul was finally put out of her misery this afternoon...I was truly upset when I saw her being led in the green room, but I suppose its a kinder way...considering how much she's been through...Reve said she was in constant pain, and wherever you are now, Rachel, may you be well and happy always................
Molly's adopted. I sure hope her new owners will treat her like the princess that she is. Priscilla'll make sure of that, though. After all, she's been fostering little Molly since she was a half blind pup.
And a terrible case of cruelty that Mr Allan and Rajes responded to this morning. Jacinta, Reve, and I gave the exact same reaction when we saw the pictures Mr Allan showed us.
"OH MY GOD!!!!!!"
I mean, HOW CAN HUMANS BE SO DARN CRUEL!!! This dog had apparently got into a fight with the neighbour's dogs, and the owner ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to take it to the Vet, or at least, surrender the poor creature to SPCA?! ^*$%^$@#$!$@%^%$&*%^%$%#@$@#$^$%">#$^*$;%*(%^*$%^$@#$!$@%^%$^&(%^%$%#@$@#$^$%'>^*$%^$@#$!$@%^%$*%^%$%#@$@#$^$%">#$^*$;%*(%^*$%^$@#$!$@%^%$^&(%^%$%#@$@#$^$%
(Its just that I never use really foul language, so that keysmash is probably the closest thing..)
You guys can spark a debate/rant/forum on how ^$#@#$">%^$#@#$ these people are...Believe it or not, the owner utterly refused to put any medicine, and the traces of yellow lotion you see on its fur were actually used on the poor dog by a neighbour. Look at the poor dog's head...
Again, how can any human BE SO CRUEL??!! WE SHOULD HAVE THE SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT TOWARDS THE BEINGS THAT SHARE THIS PLANET WITH US!!!!! DAMN, HOW CAN HUMANS BE SO SELFISH!!! LEAVING A DOG TO SUFFER FROM SUCH SERIOUS WOUNDS, AND TO LET IT GO UNTREATED!!! WOULD YOU LET YOUR OWN CHILD'S WOUNDS GO UNTREATED LIKE THAT??!! THE POOR FELLOW MUST BE IN SUCH PAIN!!!! DAMN YOU, WHOEVER YOU ARE...DAMN YOU.....
Sometimes I still can't understand myself...why am I throwing my 110% into this again...Sems to be a reenactment of QM camp; PSS, ending up shouldering as much burden as I can to make a project/task/duty successful, taking on responsibility and blame...some tell me I'm asking for it, some tell me I'm a darn idiot, some tell me its good...but somehow, I CAN'T let a project die (believe me, I've tried...my conscience just doesn't allow me...), and through the frustration, exhaustion, whatever...I feel a sense of satisfaction that I'm doing my duty...Dumb, huh? Never mind, doubt anyone will be able to understand this at all...
Uh...Somehow, don't ask me why, this reminds me of something from Geass (oh darn, I'm talking anime...darn...darn...) Btw...Geass is...Wow...*dying for Summer 2007, which, by the way, I have no idea when...*
Oh yeah, Anime Fest is on 30th June 2007. There'll be karaoke, cosplay, fan art, PS2 competition, and yours truly dancing some EXTREMELY ACT-CUTE DANCE with Hui Yen and another 2 committees...
Trip to Long's ns camp n musical performance(by Lixian)
On 3rd of June,Hon Lin organised a 'trip' to Long's ns camp at Beranang..9 of us went together with Ming chu's parent n brother..Including Vern Sheng,Wilson,Hon Lin,Guo Joon,me n chu n his bf,Daniel..We went there by 2 cars-Long's dad drove 1 n her brother drove another 1.Long's dad's car only can fit 3 more people..So chu n Daniel went in,ledt one more space..Then all d guys force me to sit in tat car,bcom 'lightbulb'.Saying d truth,during d journey to d ns camp,i was darn pai seh n kam kai..dunno wat to say,so just slept in d car..Haha..Actually this celebration for Ming Chu shud be a surprise,but this 'nice' Lee Xin went n msg Long in d morning..Telling LOng tat she's sorry cos she can't go n celebrate with her..So no more surprise lo..kinda disappointed..Haha..blaming Lee Xin again..Joking only la,dun 'zi ze',baby..
Group picture..See,i bcom 'lightbulb' again..haha..
Guys were acting so gay n girlish...tak boleh tahan la..
Ok,I remember tat i promise u all i'll post something about d triple A nite..Well,Triple A nite is a graduation night for A-Levels students.I'm joining a musical performance with many Jan2007 n March2007 students.Our performance is basically a love story,with some act,singing n dance(cha-cha,tango,rock&roll n disco).Our songs r all those old english songs.cos lecturer wants us to be different.But after this musical,all of us love those old old songs..Lol..
Erm..for ur info,Adeline Wan is d pianist,she also involves in d production team.then Hon n i r those 'cae le fe'.Altho Hon is not A-Levels student,he still can join..Cos d teacher likes him ma..Haha..Hon is dancing Cha-cha,Tango,n disco..I'm dancing disco only..
D Triple A nite is at Crystal Crown Hotel,PJ.It's not a nice hotel.All of us dun like d place..Haha..I arrived at d hotel at 9.30am(16th July) for practice.But b4 practice,v need to decorate d whole hall.V need to blow lots of balloons.At tat moment,only i realise tat i din blow a balloon for a long time d.All of these teens sat there n blow balloons,like kids.Haha,v were trying to find our childhood memories back.But d balloons were very difficult to be blown.very tiring..Suddenly,i blew a balloon till burst..My chest n lips were in pain,i worried tat whether my lips got bangkak or not..Haha..After tat,v practice,practice n practice.Then v were given 4 hours break to have our lunch,bath,make up n get ready b4 d show.
Then i n my frens decided to eat in hotel.V went to a Japanese restaurant n have a look..D price is ok,bout RM16-25.But normally for Japanese food,1 dish is not enough.Normally v will order sushi,sashimi..tat cost a lot.so lastly v dun want Japanese food.Then v went to d Ah Sun Ko Abolone restaurant n have a look.I suggested tat v can order many dishes n share together. before entering d restaurant,v asked for d menu.One of my fren was so funny,she asked whether is there any student price or not?SWT...
There were 7 of us.We were given a room..Haha..special service for 'students'..Lol..When v got d menu,v just looked at those food tat r d cheapest..In a sudden,d manager came in n wanted to take order.V requested for 5 minutes for us to decide first.But she said she can reconmend to us.She actually knew our condition,n reconmend all d cheap cheap dishes..To save money,v dun want any peanuts or dessert..D most embarrasing part is,v said v dun want d towel,then d manager said,"dun worry,v'll not charge u all for d towels,u guys can just use it"..So so malu,at tat moment,v just wanted to find a hole n hide.Haha..In d end,v ordered 4 dishes...
This is d beancurd.It costs us RM18++
7 of us(taking pictures with all d food)
We din eat any abolone in this Ah Sun Ko Abolone restaurant.V din eat any sharkfin or birdnest either..
After d lunch,v went back to d hotel room tat college book for us.There were 2 rooms,1 for guys n d other 1 is for gurls.For d gurls' room,there were at least 30 of us.V got only 3 hours left,how could everyone of us bath,make up n get ready in only 1 washroom.Somemore u all know tat,gurls r very 'mo'.So lastly not everyone bath,some just rinse through only. Then there are 2 experts.Louisa expert in make up,She did it for everyone of us.5 minutes for each.Another 1 is Michelle,expert in doing hair,5 minutes for each too..To be proud to say tat both of them r from my class.But Louisa transfer to July intake d..Gonna miss her..After everyone had get ready,v went for d SHOW!!!!!!! Oh ya,i saw Von Yi too,she looks glamorous=)
D middle 1 is Michelle..Doing hair secare bersiri..Lol..
-Yee Kuan n i-
she's cute rite?it's true tat v can't see a person's height when v took pic while sitting..Lol..Tats wat Yee Kuan said=)
-Lixian& Li-Ann-
She is(dun want to use d word'was') my classmate who is very very smart n funny too..She's a very very perasan gurl.She got JPA scholarship like Shu Ning.She leave us d,going to study at UCSI..Miss her lots.Haha..
This is our musical performance,LOVE STORY!!!
can't find me le..Haha..My face is blocked..I'm at d 2nd row=)
Me & my classmates=)
Everyone was shouting 'LOVE STORY'!
All looks so weird..
All d participants with progesteron+ our boss in this musical performance production,Mr.Kingsley=)
This is my chemistry teacher.She rarely smile.So this time,it's a miracle..Her smile is so sweet..Lol..
Btw,she's a great lecturer..Love her too..
I know i closed my eyes in this picture..But just want to show u all my Physics lecturer,Mr.Alagarajah..He's d funniest Physics lecturer tat i have ever seen..He's good in Physics n humerous=).Oh ya,he likes to ejek me also.. Enjoy his class..
This is Mr.Loenard,my English lecturer,also my mentho..He's a lame lecturer tat i have ever seen too..Very very lame..
Part of S3 and Ms.wong(math lecturer).She's a very funny lecturer.she always care for her students..Guo Joon said tat she's very cute..Lol..
Just want to show u all d 4 main characters in this musical performance.These 2 guys r d main character.white shirt 1 is d good guy,black 1 is d bad guy.
This is d watak perempuan utama,Henna=)
She's pretty rite?Oh ya,also a perasan gurl..Lol..I'm so bad,talk bad about frens..haha..
I forgot to take picture with the other main character,Carmen..Can't show u all..She's great..She creat all d steps for our dance except cha-cha..She's a sexy n kind person.nice fren altho i'm not tat close to her..Haha..
Ok la,i think i shud stop here.More pics in my friendster..=) Overall,i enjoy this muscial performance,it's something different n fun...=P
Altho it seems like i enjoy my college life,i still love u all very much..U guys r d greatest..I miss secondary school life,altho d teachers r not so good compared to d lecturers i'm having now..haha..Hope tat v can meet again at SU again during d Hari Keluarga..really hope tat everyone can make it(including me) for d Hari Keluarga..See u guys soon=)
MEDICAL CHECKUP...LOL...
Ok, medical checkups are more of a hassle than I ever thought possible. Not to mention I had to practically starve myself for the entire morning for the sake of one darn blood test...
Oh, and my sinus attacks cum flu is back...OF ALL TIMES!!!
Mom and Aunty Koi Hong (who, by the way, was kind enough to stow away from work; she's a nurse in HUKM, and navigate us to HKL) were fretting all over like it was my first day of school or something. Add that to the massive crowd and the huge impossible-NOT-to-get-lost hospital and my ever runny nose...and you have a very VERY irritable Shu Ning...
After repeated trips to the counter (fill in this, pay that, yada yada yada...), they finally gave me two specimen containers to pee in...which I dutifully did, and got pee all over my hands in the process...*cue ewwws...*
Mom had to drive aunty back to HUKM suddenly, so there I was, left alone for my first ever full medical checkup.
Wait......
Wait...................
Wait..................................
Finally, it was time for my eye checkup, colour-blindness test, which by the way, I mistook a 3 for an 8 (shows that I'm not colour-blind...I'm dead blur...) and the guy was like "WHAT?!" before I rectified my mistake.
Blood test...jeez...I can't remember the needle being that big...It's definitely much larger than the usual injection needles that barely hurt...This one was the size of a long sewing needle...(Sharon, you can shudder now...muahaha...) Ok, it didn't really hurt that much either...just kinda unnerving to see that needle piercing my skin and the nurse struggling to draw enough of my "pekat" blood to fill in 2 tubes.
Next, I was directed to somewhere in the Main Building to do ANOTHER urine test, and later on, to do a chest X-Ray. And with my absymal sense of direction, I got hopelessly lost; having to ask countless other people for directions...turn left, turn right, go straight, go up, go down...
And to fill up a total of THREE specimen containers in the space of 1 hour, hello, I'm not a Water Tank like Sharon, ok??!! (Lol...=P)
After countless wrong turnings, I reached the X-Ray area, and was coached through the process. Admittedly, it was NOT fun, and I felt like an exposed chicken on a vertical execution block (what did you expect?! They raised the chin-rest thingy so high...yes I'm short...that I was choking..)
"Deep breath, and hold it"
(WTH, I can't even breath...just get it over with, will ya?)
BEEP = X-Ray taken= bye bye gazillions of cells in my body...
Later on, Aunty Koi Hong, through some pulling of strings (Hehe...she used to work there...) convincd them to allow me to do the Mantoux Test there and then itself. Great, another jab. The needle was smaller this time, but what annoyed me was that the nurse kept telling me not to pull back, or wince, and to "tahan" even before she took the needle out of its sheath...Made me think it was some excruciatingly painful process...Turns out, it was just like BCG...
A new definition to "thick-skinned", though. The nurse tried piercing my skin the first time with the needle, only it didn't penetrate, merely drawing a few drops of blood. She had to pierce it AGAIN, somewhere near the first area. Lol...It kinda built up suspense when I watched my skin hold against the needle...caving in but NOT giving way, until finally (ouch) it was in..haha...it was kinda cute though, the way my skin swelled up slowly into a perfect circle as the liquid was slowly emptied from the vial.
By then, my hand was quite a sight. The bandage from the blood test..the swelling from the Mantoux test...and Phoebe's daily scratches...
Later on, mom took me to Pyramid to buy my "supplies", but we ended up watching Shrek 3 instead...It was HILARIOUS!!! XD
Hoping to catch Pirates, though.....*cough cough hint hint*=P
Pictures: Badminton, PM9
As promised, I've posted the pics here...
Oh, and, its Rocmond's birthday!!!!! Happy Birthday, baby Rocmond!!!
I'm beat. Really, I am. (And not to mention my hand hurts, no thanks to Jon...more bout that later...)
Ok firstly, having skipped Taekwando training for several weeks, I returned to class utterly rusty and slow...not up to standard as a black belt at all...(teacher did NOT hesitate to inform me that...hehe...) Not to mention that nasty kick I got in the ribs that's still throbbing...
Anyway today, I was practically dragged out of bed this morning to go for piano class, which I had rescheduled to 7.30am to accommodate my badminton game with the band later on. Again, I realised how long it has been since I've played badminton...Since October last year, in fact...Man, I'd better buck up or I'll lose all my reflexes and get thrashed during the next sparring, whenever that is...
Kok Hong couldn't make it in the end, as his car broke down...*sigh*...It ended up with just Wyhow, Lixian, Kimberly, Yi Qing, and me in the badminton court. As predicted, I was well and thoroughly thrashed by Wyhow, and by the end of 1 1/2 hours, I was drenched in sweat...
It was awesome to reconnect with the band, though. Credits to Wyhow for organising it, and to Xian, Kim, Qing for taking the initiative and time to come. Its where your priorities lie, and I'm touched that the band ranks high enough that they did their best to come, not missing it for other trivial matters. As I've always said, its the band spirit that matters; that we still acknowledge and celebrate the bond we share and those cherished memories we had through every performance...Octaves ROCKS...haha...
With my SS buddies around, no way I'd miss snapping a few photos with them...
Lixian and I in the badminton court
Talk about exercise...Its been ages since I got such a good run...
The band...I love you guys...
Lixian and I bathed in Jaya Square itself before we left; Xian to college to practise DANCING (ROFL....XD) and me to SPCA. Brought Junior along as well, as it was time to get him neutered.
Speaking of neutering, yes, NEUTER YOUR PETS, guys!!! You have NO IDEA how big a difference you'll make in reducing the amount of homeless pets on the street just by neutering your dog/cat. (trust me, I've seen the statistics...)
Ee Lynn came as well, meaning I did get to go dog-walking...Finally...I REALLY REALLY missed doing that. Out of the few we walked, one batch was entirely problematic, with one walking too slow, the other trying to shove her head under the other dogs' (and humans') bellies and legs, and one more lying down every step of the way. Poor fellows...Hopefully by taking them out and getting them accustomed to walks, their chances of adoption will be higher.
Oh, and now that I remember, to the few who have been debating and interrogating me about killer Rottweilers, German Sheperds and Pit Bulls, let me clarify that there is NO DOG that is born lethally aggresive, or mortally terrified or whatever. All these undesirable traits arise through their BAD EXPERIENCES in life, as well as the way they've been handled before. Again, the fault lies not with the animals, but with whoever that caused them to be that way.
Later, we washed the Cat Area and after Ee Lynn left, I hung around to help with adoptions and surrenders (as usual, there were plenty). Oh yes, the husky mix, Jon, was adopted today and when I took him out, he dragged me off my feet, causing me to fall heavily on my right arm. My shoulder, and my wrist is throbbing....................
Pam looks good, doesn't she?
In mom's office at the moment, enjoying the ultra fast Internet...but I kinda want to go home...There're stains of dog poo on my pants where those dogs leapt on me after stepping on their own faeces...Man, I stink...really... =(
Pics in PM9
PM9...fun and utterly hilarious...
Ma Daerah Turtle Camp
I wanna go to the beach!!!
Lol...all the mosquitoes, sand flies, and sunburn (yes, I'm sunburned) are nothing, NOTHING, compared to the last two nights out on the sandy beach. Ee Lynn's right...everyone HAS to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city to reconnect with nature. And who needs air-con and a cozy bed when you have the ocean breeze and the endless stretch of soft sand?
Yen and I practically jumped at the chance to join the Weekend with the Turtles camp eversince Miss Lena first told us about it, but as she was unable to go, I dragged Sharon along instead. And so, matters aside, We soon found ourselves on the way to Ma'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary on the 1st of June. Personally, I've never liked long journeys in the car...I get restless and kinda carsick. So, to cut long story short, we spenjt most of the journey gossiping, telling cold jokes, riddles, as well as ghost stories (yes, in broad daylight).
On the Teluk Cempedak beach...
Had lunch in Teluk Cempedak's McD and took severeal photos on the beach before we proceeded off to the Department of Fisheries in Kuantan. There, we were given our first "taste" of turtle watching...namely the Hawksbill turtles held in captive. The center was jam-packed with people, and it was terribly hard to try to get a picture of the turtles without me almost joining them in the pool.
There was also an area in the center that was attributed to dugongs. DUGONGS!!! Haha..Sharon and I wasted no time in getting a picture there...I wish Xian and Yen could have joined us, though...It was the perfect spot for a Dugong Family picture...
A Hawksbill turtle up close...
I L-O-V-E this picture...Mummy Dugong and I...and the dugong portrait above...
In front of the Department of Fisheries...From left: Shi May, Ying, me, Sharon, Bay, Suan Shih, Celina, and Komala...
What saddened me in the center was the little turtle hatchlings that were there, as if it were a mere petting zoo. Not only had the hatchlings been kept against their natural instinct, thuspreventing the imprinting process, but they were treated like cute little oddities that had little more importance than an object of photography. It was sickening to see them picked up roughly, subjected to blinding camera flashes, and then tossed back unceremoniously. No one really gave a damn as to what the poor creatures must have felt. And well, this was just a start to the various sides of the nature-ignorant homo sapien.
After stopping for some snacks and cup noodles, we left the tar roads behind us and went through a wonderfully bumpy path through the forest, before coming to a clearing where the sanctuary was situated. Ok, it wasn't as primitive as I had expected, for there WAS actually electricity, and a dinghy fan and lightbulb in the rooms...(I AM GOING TO SLEEP ON THE BEACH!!) And well, there was hot water for our Maggi Mee!!!
As the main agenda was at night, we spent the evening playing hilarious games like Monkey, and a new game...Cabedy, or Chapati, or dunno whatsits...It was fun, and rather BRUTAL...Quite a number emerged nursing cuts and bruises. However, it was worth it...after we successfully pinned down the opposing team's strongest member...Miss Kalpana...
After dinner, (and ages of procrastination) we filed down to the beach, where we were instructed to huddle quietly on the sand. It was considerably dark, and the sound of the waves on the shoreline were truly peaceful, if it wasn't for some people who just didn't appreciate the music of nature.
Forgive me, but I do get unnecessarily annoyed at situations like that.
After more than half an hour of waiting, we were in for a let down...the turtle decided to head back to the sea...Perhaps it was due to the ruckus we made, or just the unsuitable location...oh well...
It also struck me how ignorant we were about the feelings of the other creatures who share our planet. Ok, so most of us have NEVER seen a real turtle out in the wild, but that is still NO EXCUSE to violate to most sacred law of turtle-watching...NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!!! Aihz...I rest my case...only other nature lovers will understand the implications of that act...
Not to mention the jakun-ded shrieks of "oh, touch the flipper! touch the flipper!!" For heaven's sake...give that poor exhausted, considerably terrified turtle a break...
We got to release turtle hatchlings, however. It was kinda annoying to see all the baby turtles tortured and subjected to rough handling...Aihz...They were lifted unceromoniously, and cameras brought right up to their sensitive little eyes...Halmeey did NOT seem happy...
Little turtle hatchlings that we releasd on the beach.
Later that night, after lagging our sleeping bags out onto the sand, 5 of us; Sharon, Celina, Suan Shih, Bay, and I followed Halmeey out for beach patrol along the 1.7km stretch of beach. As we strode barefoot on the beach, I was aware of the feeling of endless space, vastness and freedom...the view stretched as far as my eyes could see...A welcome relief indeed from the claustrophobic hell in the city...Gosh...I felt so free, I felt like running, jumping into the water, rolling on the sand, and screaming at the top of my lungs...Lol...
Towards the end of the beach, Halmeey came to an abrupt halt as he spotted a dark shadow shuffling slowly on the sand ahead. He signalled to us to wait, and creeped off to investigate. And sure enough, it was yet another potential nesting turtle!!!
We settled onto the sand for the long haul...And before long, the rest of the group came to join us, and for the next two hours, we lazed on the sand, sinking into a stupor as Sharon and I took turns lying on each other's laps. At one point, I got really tired of sitting down and flopped down on the sand instead. Omg...freedom...freedom...lying on the soft sand (and getting sand in my hair, for that matter), gazing at the endless, cloudy night sky...ah...paradise...hehe...
The 5 of us were allowed to approach first when the digging noise stopped, but as we sat on the (read: SHARP) broken shells near the nesting area, we caught drifts of what happened...Apparently the nest had caved in just as the turtle was about to lay her eggs. Therefore, she decided to move off. Aah...the disappointment...
However, we were really lucky after all! Instead of heading towards the sea, the turtle merely moved several feet away and began digging again. Looks like we would get to see the turtle laying eggs after all, though only after another 2 hours more of agonising waiting...................Somewhere in between, I managed to catch my forty winks briefly...the sand feeling about as comfortable as my bed at home...
Watching the turtle lay her eggs right in front of my eyes was an awe-inspiring moment...It was like seeing something out of Animal Planet occuring right before my eyes... As I knelt there on the sand next to the turtle, I came to fully appreciate being in nature's presence...the caress of the breeze, the sound of the waves, the sight of slimy ping-pong-ball-like eggs plopping softly into the sand...
Not to mention the "showers of blessing" from the turtle when she was done...using her powerful flippers to cover the nest, inadvertently showering us with sand...This was kinda funny until it became a potential hazard later on...
You see, after she laid her eggs, she dug another hole right next to it. This served as a decoy for predators. And man, sh must have been really experienced...her nest was on such a slope that the sand kept falling back into the hole no matter how many times Halmeey tried to dig up the eggs. At one point, his entire arm got stuck in the sand, rendering him immobile and perfect target for projectiles of sand from the turtle nearby.
Once again, I realised how unsuited some people are to the outdoors...I mean, what's the point of coming to the beach if you don't wanna get dirty, right? Only Ying, me, and the guys really threw ourselves flat on the sand, ignoring the all the sand that coated our hair, clothes and even our mouths, and dug with that same fervour that drove us for the entire night. Only then did I appreciate how hard it must hav been for the turtle to dig. The position I was in made me have to dig sometimes like a dog, and sometimes like a turtle. And man, did that take up loads of energy...Its no wonder that the turtle had to stop and rest every 20 seconds or so...
Finally, we got all the eggs out and left the turtle in peace. By the way, the turtle was none other than the first turtle who retreated back into the sea! Tag 2745...Haha...*go buy 4D*...
After relocating all the eggs in the hatchery, many went back to the longhouse to sleep. It was already dawn, and Sharon and I were adamant about watching the sunrise, no matter how tired we were. So there we were...nodding off as we lay on the beach waiting for the sunrise.
Me, planting some of the eggs in the hatchery...
It was worth it though...the sunrise was as magnificient as it could get...I was utterly awestruck that I just opened my notebook and began scrawling in it...it was somewhere in the middle of the book...haha...I wasn't thinking at all but I just crapped...It was only after the sunrise that I realised what I had been writing...lol...talk about subconcious...
the glowing red emerging from the dark silhoutte of cluds on the horizon...the magnificent blaze of colour illuminating the thin citrus clouds...a truly mesmerising sight, made complete by the chirping up birds and crickets, and the lapping of waves on the shore...Hues of colour...interchanging and blending with each other in the ever-transforming sky...And finally, with the aura of a king, the great flaming ball emerges from the silhoutte and illuminated the lenghth of the sea, all though to the horizon...
After watching the sunrise, waves of exhaustion took over and we keeled over, fast asleep within seconds. It was only 8 something that we woke up, recoiling from the killer heat of the sun! OMG, it felt like we were being ROASTED alive!!! There was only 3 of us left; the rest had already returned to the longhouse. We trudged back, and within moments, were asleep once again.
Later that afternoon, we went for some tea in Kerteh town, bought some keropok, as well as one huge juicy coconut (Bay, Sharon and I shared) before we returned to do some mural painting. (Man, Hui Yen should have been here). You guys know what an utter flop I am when it comes to art; it was all I could do to help out while trying not to make a mess...Well, I can conclude this half a year of sitting next to Yen has not been out to waste...My art has improved EVER SO SLIGHTLY...
BIIIIIIG....JUUUIIIIICY...COCONUUUUT...
On another beach...look how messy my hair is...haha...the wind was so strong...From left: Celina, Sharon, me, Shi May, Ying, and Suan Shih...
Sharon and I, painting the mural.
That evening's agenda was to dig up hatched nests and calculate how many eggs were hatched, unhatched, and undeveloped. Once again, it was very possible to distinguish the 101% xiao jie's from the rest...not many actually dared to approach the foul smelling eggs and actually peel them open, regardless of the goo, the slimy liquid that squirted out, and occassionally, a dead baby turtle in the egg. It was like doing post mortems at the scene of a massacre...
The dead turtle we excavated from its shell...Sad sight...
Two live baby turtles were also found, but they were severely hunchbacked and according to Halmeey, there was no way they could survive.
One of the nests had only 11 hatched eggs and 36 unhatched/undeveloped!!! I was rather saddened, it contrary to some who were sadistically thrilled at the sight...
Remembering Ee Lynn's caution on the risk of Salmonella poisoning, I requested gloves for Sharon and I, and whoever else who were to infiltrate that particular nest...Don't want anyone to get sick now, do we?
By 10, we had put of finishing touches to our wall and went out for seafood to celebrate. The sotong was...omg...delicious....*drools*
Sharon and I also took pride in bathing in the guys toilet, which had far better water supply, but was located at a very dark part of camp. The first day, we went with Ying and ended up talking as loud as we could through the cubicles to calm our nerves. And the next day...hehe...we practically forced Edison and Bay to wait for us outside until we were done...Muahaha...
After supper that night, we were beyond exhausted, and immediately upon reaching our rooms, both of us just climbed in and fell asleep. Aihz...there goes our sleep-on-the-beach for the night...Thank goodness I woke up early the next morning and could still catch on the sand before sunrise...Aah...Paradise...
I really felt refreshed (mentally, not physically) after that brief period of reconnection with Mother Nature. And until now, I can stil feel the sand between my fingers and crunching beneath my feet...*sinks back into a dreamy stupor*...
Comment on XIan's Comment
Ya...I understand...that's why I wrote the previous post.
But firstly, Xian a...don't have such low self-esteem...you ARE smart and hardworking (hello...I've been your classmate for how many years??) and I know that if you put your mind to it, you will strive towards achieving it.
But the main issue here is what you really wanna do in life. Haha...the MAIN reason I never considered pharmacy, biotech, etc is because I don't want to stay in the lab all day long.
Hmmm...I dunno if this will help, but for me, I realised that I didn't have the right passion for medicine when I went to volunteer in the paedetric ICU in UH. Volunteering is way different from hospital attachments, and by then, I realised that I felt so awkward with the patients..didn't know what to do or say..and all I felt was just symphathy towards their plight and not the emphathy and burning to help. In fact, I didn't really feel the motivation to go every Wednesday. Lol...I know I sound so evil...
But during that time, I was already volunteering in SPCA, and everything was different. I could communicate with humans and animals alike, I felt that I really really want to help make a difference, and every Saturday, I'm RARING to go!
What my friend said is true..You only find out about the real situation in medicine when you work there, and experience it naturally, not through attachments or arranged programs. And if you don't feel the passion when you're experiencing the real thing...well...its probably not meant for you.
Maybe you sould try volunteering for a certain period of time? If you want the details, just contact me...
Pharmacy, Dentistry, etc etc etc...if you don't have the interest, then don't bother considering it. Law...erm...unless you like to argue...hehe...sorry la...I don't know much about it...just, don't let anyone else influence you la...its your decision...
Lol...there're loads of things that may suit your interest, ie...go scout around...it may be something different, but if you like it...hey, why not?! Yen's considering Marine Biology, I'm pursuing Vet, Wan Kimm is peobably going for animation...Its all out of the norm, but again, it lies with your own aim in life.=)
Hehe...Best of luck...If you need to talk, I'm always here...been havng these discussions with loads of friends...haha...PRS training hasn't gone to waste...
I felt very embarassed.Cos i WAS a PRS member too..Erm..marine biology?actually i thought of it before..But..dunno la..shu ning,thanks for ur help..I'll try to find a way to solve this BIG PROBLEM..Thanks everyone who had encourage n comfort me..Thanks buddy..Love u all..Haha
Lol...If there's one thing I learnt as a PRS member, it takes practice and a caring nature to be able to help others, but it takes TIME and OTHERS to help yourself. I'm "counselling" so many friends now..but when I was facing this problem, I had to ask advice from others. So...Nothing to be embarassed about...hehe...
You've got a few months before applying...try expose yourself to as many types of careers that seem to appeal to you...Haha...Maybe you wanna try volunteering in that Paedaetric ICU? They're still looking for volunteers...Lol...and go do research on all the other stuff. Haha...I'll help...=D
